3D Modeling

3D modeling is a useful skill to learn if you are interested in having your creations printed in 3D, designing video games, animating and so much more. It is just as much a creative art skill as it is a technology one! In this nanodegree, students learned what 3D Modeling and 3D Printing are used for, and how to use Tinkercad (a web-based program for 3D modeling) to create 3-Dimensional designs.

This nanodegree will get students up and running with 3D modeling, a skill equally technology-forward and creative, and useful in domains including 3D printing, game design, animating, and more. Students will get started in using Tinkercad, a web-based 3D modeling program that is a great launching pad for 3D modeling. Through creating a series of beginner projects together students will master the basic and essential skills for 3D modeling and in the final sessions, create their own designs from scratch to present. These skills are transferable to other 3D modeling softwares.

Classes will be interactive and fun, with students actively creating step-by-step and sharing projects.

Each student will have an account created for them in Tinkercad which will continue to exist after the nanodegree so that they can practice and advance their 3D modeling skills further.

Week 1: Basic skills: Tinkercad Interface and Keychain

Aim: Become familiar with with the Tinkercad interface and functionality, and create a keychain with your name on it.

* Workplane
* Using and changing shapes
* Creating holes

Week 2: Cat

Aim: Learn to combine basic shapes to create more complex shapes and create a cat.

* Combining shapes
* Grouping objects
* Copy and paste grouped objects
* Rotating

Week 3: Individual unique projects

Aim: Brainstorm ideas for a unique project to demonstrate your skills that is challenging but not too complex

* Examine example projects 
* Brainstorm ideas with classmates in breakout groups
* Begin creating your unique project, and continue working on it throughout the week as needed to finish and present next week

Week 4: Presentations

Aim: Present your unique project.

* Presentation
* What your project is?
* What inspired you to create it?
* How long it took?
* Your estimate of how many shapes you used?
* What the hardest part was?
* Anything else you’d like to share
* Feedback and questions
